DRUGS BANNED FOR MARKETING IN INDIA

*G.S.R. 780(E).– Whereas the Central Government is satisfied that the use of drug formulations containing Phenformin is likely to involve risk to human beings and is no longer considered therapeutically justified;
And whereas the Central Government is satisfied that better alternatives to the drug formulations containing Phenformin are now available;
And whereas the Central Government is satisfied that it is necessary and expedient in public interest to prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of the drug formulations aforesaid;
Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940(23 of 1940), the Central Government hereby prohibits the manufacture, sale or distribution of Phenformin for human use.
This notification shall take effect from the 1st day of October, 2003.
